Tips for financial aid application process

Applying for financial aid can be made easier by following these steps:

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in its entirety.
    • Read all instructions carefully.
    • Answer all questions completely.
    • It is best to fill out the application based on a complete tax return.
    • Do not send any tax returns or other paperwork to the processor. If it is needed, the college will ask you for any information it needs to complete your financial aid file.
    • Be sure that you (and your parents, if required) sign the form.
    • Mail the form to the processor yourself; put sufficient postage on it.

Students may find that completing the FAFSA on the web is an even better way to initiate the application process. Be sure to print the signature page, sign it, and mail it to the processor within 48 hours of the time you submitted the application - if you are unable to use a PIN number.

If a student was not born before January 1, 1986 for the 2009-2010 FAFSA, they will be considered dependent on their parent(s) and MUST provide parents' financial data in addition to their own financial data. An exception to this rule is for veterans discharged other than dishonorably, students who are married on the date they apply or students with dependent children for whom they provide more than 50% of their support.

  2. Students will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the federal processor. Review it for correctness and completeness.
  3. Students selected for "verification" may be asked to provide additional documentation - do so as quickly and completely as possible. Incomplete applications are not reviewed, and therefore no aid is awarded until the file is complete.
  4. There is a separate application process for the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). Students interested in applying for a loan must initiate that request separately, using the application from the financial aid office ONLY.
  5. PHCC processes awards on a continuing basis after April 15 of each year. Students who have not "heard" from the financial aid office within three weeks of their file being completed, should contact them immediately. Ask questions! Stay involved in the process.
