Medical coder/biller
![]() |
Annually, billions of dollars in claims are processed and investigated by insurance groups and government programs such as Medicare. The health care industry has adopted several widely used coding systems to expedite medical billing and reimbursement procedures. Coders/billers are experts in medical billing systems. They assign codes to patient symptoms, diagnoses, operations, and treatments to process reimbursement claims. In addition to documenting records, the coded information may be used by practitioners to help make diagnostic decisions. Successful medical coders/billers are organized, detail-oriented individuals who enjoy working with numbers and are undaunted by paperwork. Program information and course listings |
Career opportunitiesCoders/billers work in hospitals, doctors' offices, and for insurance companies under the supervision of a medical record administrator. Coders/billers also work with minimal supervision in physicians' offices, often as independent contractors. Job titles include coder, medical record coder, coding technician, coding clerk, and coding specialist. Job outlookDemand for more accurate claims processing is strong, and employment opportunities for medical coders are very good nationwide, due to an increased number of medical tests and treatments for an increasing and aging population. Salary rangeMedical coders in our area typically earn between $19,000 to $25,000 per year. Coders who work as independent contractors may earn considerably higher wages.
