As part of the general education program, the humanities courses seek to provide the student with opportunities to explore the areas of art, architecture, literature, music, theater, dance, religion, and philosophy. Students will develop a knowledge and appreciation for the individual disciplines, their inter-relationships, and their diverse social, cultural, and historical perspectives and will explore the many facets of the human experience revealed in these disciplines. Opportunities to learn, practice and grow in the creative and performance disciplines will also be available to students in the humanities.

Core values

Humanities students who complete humanities courses at PHCC will:

  • learn critical analytical and reflective thinking skills
  • understand theory and practice of the various humanistic disciplines
  • develop critical research and writing skills
  • understand diverse historical as cultural perspectives
  • understand the world’s philosophical traditions
  • develop effective preparation for life-long learning
To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child.

—Cicero, first century BCE

Our faculty firmly believe that empowerment is derived from fully understanding our place in an historical timeline through the study of art forms such as pictures, sculptures, architecture, music, theatre, dance, cinema, literature, religion, and philosophy. Each cultural group studied in humanities has left a legacy of these expressions that answer the questions: “Who am I?” “From where do I come?” “Where am I going?”

The Humanities department offers a variety of courses that explores this rich legacy of Western culture. These standard and honors courses, which satisfy the general education and Gordon Rule requirements, include studies of the ancient world to the modern day. In addition to these humanities courses, the department offers courses that satisfy the humanities requirement within the disciplines of music, art, drama, philosophy, ethics, and religion. Elective courses are also offered in voice, piano, violin, drawing, and acting.

Students are encouraged to also join the student activities sponsored Fine Arts and Drama clubs.
