Developmental education

Alric Pottberg Library on New Port Richey campusOur mission is to assist you in developing the academic and personal skills that will enable you to succeed in both your college-level courses and in your professional life.

Within this department, you will find three distinct entities: the Adult General Education program, the developmental education program, and the academic support centers – the Teaching-Learning Centers (TLCs) and the mathematics laboratory.

The Adult General Education program with sections in: GED (General Educational Development) preparation and ABE (Adult Basic Education) is for those over the age of 18 who do not possess a high school diploma. The tuition charge for the program is $30 per term for Florida residents and $120 per term for non-Florida residents. The program provides students with access to Internet-based software, workshops, and tutoring. Its goal is to prepare students to take the General Education Development (GED) test. For more information about the Adult General Education program contact the TLC located on any of the four campuses located in Dade City, New Port Richey, Brooksville or Spring Hill.

The developmental education program is designed for those students who have not attained the minimum required scores for admission into college-level courses. The purpose of developmental education courses is to review and teach the concepts and skills which will enable students to complete college-level courses successfully. Although credits earned by taking developmental education classes do not satisfy degree requirements, the grades earned in these courses will impact students’ grade point averages (GPAs).

The Teaching-Learning Centers (TLCs) are housed in or near the library buildings on each campus and provide enrolled students of all levels and needs with a variety of services including free English and mathematics tutoring, orientations, seminars and workshops.

The mathematics laboratory, located within the TLC on the New Port Richey campus, offers free tutoring and assistance for those students who are enrolled in pre-algebra and elementary algebra classes.

FAQ

What developmental education (college preparatory) courses are offered at PHCC?
Six four-credit developmental education classes are offered at PHCC, two each in English, mathematics, and reading: ENC 0001 – Writing I, ENC 0010 – Writing II, MAT 0012 – Pre-algebra, MAT 0024 – Elementary Algebra, REA 0001 – Reading I, and REA 0002 – Reading II. Credits earned in developmental education courses do not apply toward degrees or certificates; however, grades earned in these courses will be factored into students’ GPAs.
In what formats are developmental education classes offered?
Currently, developmental education classes are offered in two-days-a-week and three-days-a-week formats on all four campuses.
How does Academic Systems Algebra differ from traditional mathematics courses?
Students who are comfortable with computers, who are self-disciplined, and who lead full, active lives are strongly encouraged to consider registering for Academic Systems Algebra classes. These classes are held in computer labs and use an Internet-based program to provide mathematics instruction. The instructor is in the classroom at all times as a facilitator who is available to answer questions and provide additional instruction. In contrast, traditionally taught mathematics classes are classroom-based, and computer labs are used periodically. The software used in traditional mathematics classes is MyMathLab.
Are there any additional requirements that must be met prior to enrolling in college-level course work?
In order to be able to register for college-level courses, students who are enrolled in the upper-levels of developmental education classes (ENC 0010 – Writing II, MAT 0024 – Elementary Algebra, and REA 0002 – Reading II) must not only pass their course work with a grade of C or higher, but they must also pass the Florida College Basic Skills Exit Test (Exit Test). Students who do not pass the initial administration of the Exit Test are permitted to have only one retest which will be administered after thirty-one days have elapsed since the initial test.

Mission statement

The mission of the developmental education program at Pasco-Hernando Community College is to provide students with the tools necessary to attain the requisite academic, technological, and personal skills to succeed in college, employment, and lifelong learning. The academic competencies that students use in developmental English, mathematics, and reading courses will create a foundation which allows them to succeed in more challenging academic coursework. In addition, students will gain a working knowledge of technology that will allow them to use various software programs, access and manipulate instructional systems, take online courses, and conduct research using approved sources and databases. Furthermore, students will refine their personal and interpersonal skills through interdisciplinary courses, teamwork, cohorts, and learning communities. The program’s overall goal is not only to improve the success rate of students in developmental education classes, but also to enable students to continue on to upper-level courses and ultimately progress to the university or professional employment.
