Dean’s message
The Division of Arts and Sciences offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for students– from adult basic education through the Associate in Arts degree and post-baccalaureate training in our Educator Preparation Institute (EPI).
There are six departments within the Division of Arts and Sciences. The five core departments are: communications, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. I encourage you to browse each department’s individual web pages to acquaint yourself with the course offerings and exciting activities occurring within these departments.
Our newest department – the department of developmental education – encompasses the areas of adult basic education and general educational development (ABE/GED) and college preparatory instruction. We are also proud of the Teaching-Learning Centers (TLCs) on each of our four campuses. The TLCs have qualified staff ready and able to assist students by providing individualized assistance and materials for instruction.
Another “jewel” of the Division of Arts and Sciences is our Educator Preparation Institute (EPI). Our institute was among the first eight institutes created by the State of Florida, Department of Education, to help address the teacher shortage in Florida. People possessing bachelor’s degrees in any field can take a series of 21 institutional credits over a seven-month period, qualifying them for a permanent teaching certificate. Recently, the institute created the option of completing the 21 required credits completely online providing a convenient way for working adults to complete the certification course work. Please browse the EPI Web pages to learn more about this exciting program.
The college vision statement emphasizes student learning. In the Division of Arts and Sciences we are proud of our dedicated full-time and adjunct faculty who are intensely interested in our students’ success. Our professors have passion for teaching which translates into enthusiastic classroom instruction. Some initiatives within the division that have been embraced by our highly-qualified instructors include the Peace and Social Justice Institute, Service Learning, the Citizen Scholar Program, and a variety of opportunities in global and international education.
The Division of Arts and Sciences can help you realize your dream, whether it is to take a course for personal enrichment, get your GED diploma, earn your certificate to teach in the state of Florida, or provide the liberal arts foundation necessary for transferring to a four-year university. We’re here to help guide you through the educational process. Please allow us to help you Find your Dream at PHCC.
